Learning Platform What Is It?
“the education system has benefited enormously from greater availability of pupil-level data ... every parent should be able to access that information”
Schools White Paper 2005
What are Learning Platforms?
Teachernet suggests that Learning Platform is "an umbrella term that describes a broad range of ICT systems used to deliver and support learning and teaching" and it may be applied to VLEs (Virtual Learning Environment) and MLEs (Managed Learning Environment).
A Managed Learning Environment refers to the whole range of information systems and processes that support learning and the management of learning within an institution.
A Virtual Learning Environment refers to the online interactions of various kinds which take place between learners and tutors. This includes curriculum mapping, delivery, assessment, tutor support, communication and tracking.
“we need to build on the Annual School Report ... to ensure that parents get relevant, timely and jargon free information about how their child is doing ”
Ruth Kelly, speech to the SHA annual conference 2005
Why do I need one?
Learing Platforms can transform the learning and teaching experience and enhance the personalisation of learning. As such they can support the aims of the Schools White Paper "Higher Standards, Better Schools for All - More Choice for Parents and Pupils"
Also the DfES e-Strategy Harnessing Technology: Transforming Learning and Children's Services, which sets out the government's targets for ensuring that better use is made of ICT in schools, contains a specific requirement for "all pupils need to be able to access a personal online workspace, capable of supporting an e-portfolio, by 2007-08".
